What does dog saliva consist of?

Dog saliva is a complex and multifunctional biological fluid that performs a number of important functions in the animal’s body. It not only helps maintain oral hygiene by cleaning the mucous membrane and teeth from food debris, but also has protective properties, preventing the development of caries. It contains various components that provide antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory effects:

Immunoglobulins are special protein molecules that play a key role in the functioning of the immune system. They act as antibodies, binding to viruses and bacteria, and help the body fight infections.

Lysozyme is an enzyme with a powerful antibacterial effect. It destroys the cell walls of bacteria, leading to their death, and also has anti-inflammatory properties, promoting rapid healing of damaged tissues.

Lactoperoxidase is another enzyme that activates oxidative processes in saliva, which leads to a decrease in the number of pathogenic microorganisms. This enzyme creates unfavorable conditions for the reproduction of bacteria and thereby reduces the risk of infection.

Mucins are glycoproteins that play an important role in the formation of mucus. Mucus, in turn, helps to glue bacteria together and remove them from the oral cavity, which prevents them from penetrating the body and developing infections.

Despite the presence of antiseptic properties, dog saliva is not a sterile liquid. It is indeed able to suppress the growth and activity of some types of bacteria, such as streptococci and E. coli. However, other microorganisms, such as staphylococci, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and capnocytophages, are resistant to enzymes in dog saliva and can successfully reproduce in the animal’s oral cavity. These bacteria can be dangerous for both humans and other animals. Although they often do not cause visible symptoms in dogs themselves, their presence in saliva can pose a serious threat when in contact with damaged tissue.

The diversity of microbes living in dog saliva is explained by a number of factors. An important role is played by the habit of animals to frequently lick their fur and skin, which leads to the transfer of various microorganisms from the environment into the oral cavity. In addition, the lack of regular and thorough oral hygiene contributes to the accumulation of bacteria, which creates favorable conditions for their reproduction. This explains why dogs quite often have problems with teeth and gums, such as caries and inflammatory processes.

Why should you not let your dog lick wounds?

There are several reasons why it is not recommended to let your dog lick wounds:

Risk of infection with dangerous bacteria. Any wound is a violation of the integrity of the skin or mucous membrane, which makes it vulnerable to the penetration of pathogenic microorganisms. Even through small damage to the skin, bacteria can enter the body and spread quickly, causing infectious diseases. When a dog licks a wound, dangerous microbes that live in its oral cavity can get there along with the antibacterial components of its saliva. These microbes can include bacteria, viruses, fungi, and even multicellular parasites that can cause serious diseases.

Transfer of microbes from the oral cavity. Dog saliva contains a large number of different microorganisms. Some of them may be safe for the animal itself, but pose a threat to humans if they get into the wound. For example, staphylococcus, which is usually present in the dog’s oral cavity, when it gets into the wound, can begin to actively multiply and cause suppuration, which is life-threatening. This is especially true for people with weakened immunity, for whom any infection can lead to serious consequences.

Slowing down the healing process. Dogs have a rough tongue, which can further injure the tissues at the wound site, delaying their recovery. Repeated mechanical damage caused by frequent licking can lead to chronic inflammation and slow healing. That is why after surgeries or serious injuries, veterinarians recommend using special protective collars that prevent the dog from accessing the inflamed areas.

Ineffectiveness of saliva in treating serious injuries. In some cases, microbes can penetrate deep into the tissue and begin to spread beyond the original wound. In such situations, local treatment, including exposure to saliva, is insufficient to prevent the development of infection. In these cases, more serious measures are required, such as the use of antiseptics and antibiotics, to prevent complications.

Dog owners can always disinfect the wound in a safer way. One of the most effective methods is rinsing the wound with clean water or an antiseptic solution, which helps remove dirt and microbes from its surface. After this, the wound can be covered with a bandage or a sterile dressing to prevent further contamination. However, if the wound is severe or does not heal well, it is recommended to contact a veterinarian for professional help.

Dangers of Dog Saliva for Humans

Although dog saliva may not pose a serious threat to human health under certain conditions, there are still risks. If there are no breaks in the skin and you wash your hands and face thoroughly after contact with the animal, the risk of infection is minimal. However, even with proper hygiene, the risk of infection remains, especially if saliva comes into contact with mucous membranes of the face, such as the eyes, nose, or mouth.

When a dog licks the area of the eyes, nose, or mouth, there is a risk of transmitting serious diseases such as rabies. Rabies is a viral disease that is transmitted through the saliva of an infected animal and is almost always fatal after the first symptoms appear. Even if a dog looks healthy but has not been vaccinated against rabies, it may be a carrier of the virus. Therefore, it is extremely important to avoid close contact with unfamiliar and stray animals, especially if they try to lick your face or hands.

Dog saliva can be especially dangerous if there are any injuries to the human skin, even minor ones. Dangerous microbes can get into such wounds, which is especially dangerous for people with weakened or undeveloped immunity, such as small children, the elderly, and people with immunodeficiencies. Even if the dog is domestic and vaccinated, its saliva may contain bacteria that are dangerous to humans, such as pasteurella, capnocytophaga, bordetella, and other microorganisms that can cause serious diseases.

In nature, saliva is the only available means for animals to clean open skin lesions. However, despite this, saliva may not only not help, but also aggravate the situation, slowing down the healing process and increasing the risk of infection. Therefore, if a dog is injured, a more reliable method would be to wash the wound with clean water, treat it with an antiseptic, and apply a sterile bandage. These measures will provide better protection against infection than using saliva.

Even if there are no visible wounds on the body, contact with dog saliva is not completely safe. Germs from the animal’s mouth can get onto the mucous membrane or into microscopic damage to human skin, which can lead to the development of an infection.

To minimize the risks, you should adhere to the following rules:

Do not allow unfamiliar and street dogs to lick you, especially on the street. Protect your face and damaged areas of the skin from contact with the dog’s tongue.

Regularly monitor the health of your pet – get vaccinations on time, do not miss scheduled visits to the veterinarian, and also pay attention to the dog’s oral hygiene, regularly brushing its teeth.

These measures will help reduce the risk of infection and maintain the health of both the person and his pet.

Can Supplements Help with Erectile Dysfunction?

Erectile dysfunction, or difficulty achieving and maintaining an erection, is a common problem that affects many men. With demand growing, dietary supplement manufacturers are actively marketing their products, claiming that they can help solve this delicate problem. However, how true are these claims?

Key Aspects to Consider When Choosing Dietary Supplements for Potency

Research and Scientific Evidence. The main problem is that most studies on the components of dietary supplements for improving potency were conducted on animals, not on humans. This significantly reduces the reliability of the conclusions about their effectiveness. To date, there is no convincing evidence confirming that these supplements actually help cope with erectile dysfunction in humans. It is important to remember that the lack of a scientific basis casts doubt on the effectiveness and safety of these products.

Composition and interaction of components. Many dietary supplements for increasing potency contain several active substances at once. This causes additional concern, since there is still insufficient research into how these ingredients interact with each other. It is unknown how their combined effect may affect the body. Moreover, potential interactions with other medications that you are taking can also lead to unpredictable consequences.

Lack of strict quality control. Unlike drugs, dietary supplements are not subject to the same strict control by regulatory authorities. This means that the information about the composition and dosage indicated on the label may not correspond to reality. As a result, you may receive a product with the wrong dosage or a composition that is not at all what is stated. This is especially dangerous, since it leads to unjustified expectations and potential health risks.

Hidden ingredients. Manufacturers of dietary supplements for potency sometimes add active components from drugs to their products, such as PDE-5 inhibitors. These substances can indeed improve erection, but they have their own contraindications and side effects. It is important to understand that the exact dosage of these active ingredients may remain unknown, which makes the use of such dietary supplements especially risky. This may lead to unforeseen consequences, including serious health problems.

Health risks. Due to the lack of transparency in production and proper quality control, some dietary supplements may pose a real threat to health. Their uncontrolled use may cause serious side effects, including life-threatening conditions. It is important to realize that choosing such supplements without consulting a doctor may lead to undesirable consequences.

Conclusion and recommendations. If you are considering using any supplements to improve potency, it is strongly recommended that you first consult a doctor. This will reduce possible risks, get qualified advice and choose the safest and most effective way to solve your problem. Remember that your health is the most important value, and it should be trusted only to proven methods and means.

Panax Ginseng

Panax Ginseng and Its Possible Effects on Erectile Dysfunction

Panax ginseng, particularly its Asian varieties, has long attracted attention for its purported properties in improving erectile function. The main active compounds found in ginseng are called ginsenosides. These substances are thought to help dilate blood vessels and relax the smooth muscles of the corpora cavernosa of the penis, which in turn makes it easier to achieve and maintain an erection.

Scientific Evidence and Research

Studies on the effects of ginseng on erectile dysfunction have yielded mixed results, partly due to the natural variability of the plant. Ginseng is known to grow in a variety of climates, and its chemical composition can vary significantly depending on the region where it is grown, when it is harvested, the method of processing, and even the plant variety. Some types of ginseng may contain more active compounds than others, making it difficult to standardize and evaluate its effectiveness.

For example, a high-quality review of studies published in 2021, including data from 9 clinical trials involving 587 men, found that ginseng had only a minimal effect on erectile dysfunction. The effect was so small that it was not clinically significant, making its effectiveness questionable. However, there are studies in which ginseng has shown more promising results when taken over a long period of time (e.g. 2-3 months), indicating the need for further, larger, standardized studies to obtain more accurate data.

Side Effects and Risks

Medical experts warn against using ginseng as a primary treatment for erectile dysfunction due to potential side effects. In the short term, ginseng is considered relatively safe, but it can cause unpleasant symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. Problems begin to appear when ginseng is consumed in high doses (about 3 grams per day) or with long-term use. This can lead to what is known as “ginseng abuse syndrome,” which includes symptoms such as hypertension, nervousness, insomnia, and skin rashes. In more severe cases, mental health problems such as confusion and depression, as well as heart and liver problems, may occur.

Special attention should be paid to the fact that ginseng can negatively interact with medications, especially those used to treat cardiovascular diseases. In 2016, the American Heart Association included ginseng in the list of substances that can worsen the condition of patients with heart failure. This is due to the fact that ginseng can enhance or weaken the effects of certain drugs, which makes its use in such cases extremely risky.

Maral antlers

The effectiveness of maral antlers and scientific data

Maral antlers, which are young deer antlers, have long been used in traditional medicine as a means of allegedly increasing potency. These supplements, popular in some cultures, especially in Russia and Asia, attract attention due to their supposed properties to stimulate testosterone production and improve sexual function.

However, scientific data confirming the effectiveness of maral antlers in the fight against erectile dysfunction is virtually nonexistent. One of the few studies conducted in 2003 found that men taking maral antler supplements showed no significant improvement over those taking a placebo. Furthermore, testosterone levels in the participants taking the supplements also did not increase, casting doubt on any claims that the antlers can improve male performance.

Side Effects and Risks

While most maral antler supplements do not cause any noticeable side effects, there are a number of reported cases that raise serious concerns. For example, there was a case of liver toxicity associated with the supplements. Furthermore, there was a case of a 61-year-old man developing Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, a rare and fatal prion disease that causes rapidly progressive dementia and mental disorders. Doctors suggested that the antler supplement could be the cause, as deer suffer from a prion disease known as “chronic wasting disease” or “zombie deer disease.” This disease attacks the brain of animals, causing loss of appetite, behavioral problems, and ultimately death.

Given that scientific evidence does not support the effectiveness of antlers, and given the possible serious risks, such supplements cannot be recommended for improving potency.

Epimedium, or Horny Goat Weed

Hornweed and Its Use in Traditional Medicine

Epimedium, also known as Horny Goat Weed, is a plant widely used in traditional Chinese medicine. It has long been considered a powerful aphrodisiac and has been used to increase sexual desire, increase testosterone levels, and combat premature ejaculation. Horny goat weed contains over 200 different chemical compounds, with the main focus being on flavonoids, especially icariin, which is considered the key active ingredient and is often used in dietary supplements.

Research and effectiveness

Unfortunately, despite the popularity of horny goat weed in folk medicine, there is little high-quality research to support its effectiveness in humans. Most of the data on the effects of icariin and other horny goat weed compounds have been obtained in experiments on laboratory animals, but it is incorrect to transfer these results to humans due to significant differences in physiology. However, horny goat weed is currently considered a relatively safe supplement, although minor side effects such as nausea, abdominal discomfort, or mild dizziness are possible.

Risks and drug interactions

It is worth noting that high doses of horny goat weed can cause more serious problems, such as arrhythmia and damage to blood vessels. In addition, the supplement can interact with various medications, which can lead to unwanted side effects.

m consequences. For example, horny goat weed can increase or decrease the effects of drugs used to treat hypertension and cardiovascular diseases, as well as some antidepressants and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. This interaction can lead to unwanted and potentially dangerous side effects, such as blood pressure surges, heart rhythm disturbances, and other complications.

Thus, despite the popularity of horny goat weed in traditional medicine and numerous claims about its effectiveness, the use of this supplement requires caution. Before starting to take horny goat weed, especially in combination with other drugs, it is extremely important to consult a doctor to avoid possible side effects and unwanted interactions.

L-arginine

L-arginine and its effect on potency

L-arginine is an amino acid that plays an important role in the biochemistry of the human body. It is a precursor to nitric oxide, a molecule responsible for the dilation of blood vessels. In the context of improving potency, L-arginine is used in dietary supplements to maintain and improve erectile function. Nitric oxide promotes relaxation and dilation of blood vessels, which is necessary to achieve and maintain an erection. The body obtains L-arginine mainly through protein foods such as meat, fish, eggs, and dairy products.

Scientific Research and Results

Numerous studies have focused on the effects of L-arginine on erectile dysfunction. A 2019 review of studies found that regular intake of L-arginine may improve symptoms of erectile dysfunction. This review analyzed data from 10 clinical trials that involved men with mild to moderate forms of erectile dysfunction. The results suggest that L-arginine may have some positive effects on improving erectile function, although its effects may not be as significant as those of some medications.

Moreover, another review found that L-arginine may enhance the effects of PDE5 inhibitors such as Viagra. These drugs are used to treat erectile dysfunction and help improve blood flow to the genitals, thereby promoting stronger erections. Since L-arginine may work synergistically with these medications, using it in combination with them may be beneficial for some patients.

Side Effects and Dosage

L-arginine is generally considered safe when taken in recommended doses. However, high doses of more than 9 grams per day may cause side effects. These include nausea, abdominal discomfort, and diarrhea. This is because the body may not be able to handle large amounts of the amino acid, leading to digestive upset.

L-arginine should be taken with caution and under the advice of a doctor, especially if you have any underlying medical conditions or are taking other medications. Consulting with a healthcare professional will help determine the optimal dosage and minimize the risk of side effects.

Maca, or Mayen’s Lepidium

Maca and its effects on sexual health

Maca, also known as Mayen’s Lepidium, is a root vegetable that resembles a turnip. In traditional medicine, maca is used to increase sexual desire and improve potency. Maca root contains essential amino acids, iodine, iron, and a number of biologically active substances, including the alkaloid imidazole, which may explain the plant’s supposed effects on sexual health.

Scientific Research and Effectiveness

There is currently not enough convincing scientific evidence to support the effectiveness of maca in improving erections. Despite this, some studies indicate the possibility that maca may help increase sexual desire and relieve sexual dysfunction, especially in cases caused by taking antidepressants. However, these studies are limited in number and quality, and overall there is insufficient evidence to recommend maca as a primary treatment for erectile dysfunction.

Side Effects and Drug Interactions

While maca generally does not cause serious side effects, it may theoretically interact with certain medications. These interactions may alter the effectiveness of the medications, either increasing or decreasing their effectiveness. This highlights the need for caution when using maca supplements, especially if you are taking other medications.

Due to the lack of evidence on the effectiveness of maca and the potential for drug interactions, it is recommended that you consult with your healthcare professional before taking maca supplements.

It may seem that alternative medicine is hopelessly outdated, but such medicine is still popular and its value is passed down from generation to generation. This diverse world of methods and approaches, sometimes beyond the scope of traditional medicine, attracts people’s attention with its accessibility, unconventional techniques and the promise of a natural and harmonious effect on the body. Many alternative medicine practices have historical roots and are closely related to the cultural and religious traditions of various peoples.

Studying the effectiveness of alternative medicine methods is becoming increasingly relevant in the modern world. Science seeks to understand how safe and effective these methods are to offer society the most informed health decisions.

In this review, we’ve collected five well-known alternative medicine methods and examined what the science says about their effectiveness and safety. Our goal is to provide readers with evidence-based information to help them make informed decisions about their health and well-being.

Mud therapy

Mud therapy is a method that many of you have probably tried while on holiday, immersing yourself in mud baths or visiting mud springs. Mud contains many minerals such as aluminum salts and other minerals that can be beneficial to the body.

This treatment method can serve as an additional option in your health care repertoire. Mud helps reduce inflammation and helps remove dead skin cells. For people with osteoarthritis, this may lead to decreased joint pain. However, for rheumatoid arthritis and venous insufficiency, mud therapy, unfortunately, does not bring significant relief.

Detox

Detoxification is a method of cleansing the body of toxins and waste, which may include special foods and diets to cleanse the colon and liver, procedures to cleanse the lymphatic system, and colonic flushing techniques.

However, in fact, the body itself has built-in cleansing mechanisms, and detox is not necessary. The kidneys filter the blood, and the liver actively fights toxins, which is already inherent in nature.

Acupuncture

Acupuncture is a technique that comes from traditional Chinese medicine. During this procedure, the specialist selects certain points on the patient’s body and inserts needles there. It is expected that this can help solve a wide range of problems.

However, clinical trial results show that acupuncture often does not produce significant results. In treating pain, for example, it is no more effective than a placebo. Even if the needles are inserted into random areas of the body, and not into specific “energy” points, the effect remains the same.

Herbal medicine – herbal treatment

Using medicinal herbs can be dangerous. All herbs contain active components, but their concentrations may vary and it is often difficult to determine the exact content of such substances. This may lead to a risk of complications or overdose.

Halotherapy

Halotherapy is a procedure during which patients are placed in a room with walls covered in salt and breathe moist air saturated with salt.

While moist, salty air may theoretically have its benefits, there is very little research to support its effectiveness. Those studies that have been conducted have not found significant improvement in lung condition from halotherapy.

Myth: Laser treatment of sore throat is effective

A laser is a device that creates an amplified optical beam consisting of light waves synchronized in time and space.

The therapeutic laser generates low intensity laser radiation (LILR) with a wavelength from 365 to 904 nm. This range includes ultraviolet, visible and infrared radiation spectra.

They differ in the depth of tissue penetration, which allows the laser to be used for various therapeutic purposes.

Since the invention of the laser, its use in medicine has attracted the interest of researchers. Low-intensity laser radiation is considered as a means of reducing inflammation and stimulating metabolic processes in the body.

Therefore, its use has been studied in various fields of medicine, such as ophthalmology, dermatology, otolaryngology and others.

However, the use of laser treatment is not always effective. Despite some evidence of its usefulness in the treatment of certain musculoskeletal and skin conditions.

The laser treatment process involves sending light pulses to the desired area. This is usually painless, although the person may feel a warm or mild tingling sensation.

The duration of the procedure can vary from a few minutes to several hours depending on the area of treatment.

To treat angina, some medical institutions offer a course of treatment consisting of 10-12 sessions. The duration of the manipulation varies from one to five minutes for each point of influence.

Is it true that laser helps with sore throat?

The technique is widespread in Russia, but there are no significant clinical studies confirming the effectiveness of therapeutic laser for angina.

Laser therapy, like other physiotherapeutic methods, is not included in generally accepted international recommendations, including for the treatment of recurrent or chronic tonsillitis, which is characterized by periodic and frequent exacerbations of sore throat.

There has been limited research on the use of therapeutic laser for the treatment of sore throat in the Russian Federation. Participants reported positive results, including decreased pain and faster recovery time by 12 days.

However, these experiments were carried out on a limited number of patients, and the effectiveness of laser therapy has not been confirmed.

There are a number of strict contraindications to laser therapy

Oncological diseases.

Blood clotting disorders.

Liver and kidney failure.

First half of pregnancy.

Severe diseases of the heart and blood vessels.

Cerebrovascular accident.

As with any medical procedure, laser treatment may carry the risk of complications such as bleeding, infection, or hearing and smell impairment. However, if the procedure is performed correctly, the likelihood of their occurrence is minimal.

How is a therapeutic laser different from a surgical laser?

Therapeutic and surgical lasers have differences in power and wavelength. A surgical laser has greater power and wavelength. It is able to coagulate blood vessels, evaporate excess tissue and provide a clean cut without heating.

The surgical laser is believed to provide more precise cuts and also reduce blood loss and the risk of complications after surgery compared to conventional surgical instruments. This method is recommended in international guidelines for certain operations.

However, the choice of intervention method depends on the specific situation, and the decision to use a laser is made by the doctor, taking into account all the circumstances.

To date, the effectiveness of therapeutic laser for the treatment of sore throat has not been confirmed. This method is not included in generally accepted international recommendations, and its use for acute or chronic sore throat is not justified.

Hiccups are involuntary contractions of the diaphragm, the muscle that separates the chest and abdomen and plays a critical role in breathing.

Sometimes the brain sends incorrect signals, causing the diaphragm to contract faster. During a spasm, the muscle presses on the lungs and pushes out air, this process is accompanied by a characteristic sound. There are many possible causes: from accidental swallowing of air to diseases of the nervous system.

There are several medical methods for stopping hiccups.

Take a deep breath and hold your breath for 10–20 seconds. This helps restore breathing rhythm and balance the diaphragm.

Use a paper bag to inhale and exhale. This method helps redistribute carbon dioxide levels in the blood, which can lead to fewer hiccups.

Carry out measured breathing: take 5-7 deep breaths and exhalations. This helps eliminate diaphragm spasm and reduce the frequency of hiccups.

Hug your knees, lean forward and hold this pose for 20-30 seconds. This exercise helps relax the diaphragm and reduce its contractions.

Drink a glass of cold water quickly. Cold water can stimulate the vagal nerve and reduce the activity of the diaphragm.

Suck up the ice cube. Cold can help relieve diaphragmatic spasms and reduce hiccups.

Eat something with a strong taste or smell. A strong taste or smell can distract the brain and stop the hiccups.

Try to induce a gag reflex. This can help balance the pressure in the stomach and reduce hiccups.

Stick your tongue out as far as possible. This can activate the diaphragm reflex and reduce hiccups.

Place some granulated sugar on your tongue. This can stimulate nerve receptors and reduce the frequency of contractions of the diaphragm.

Massage the carotid artery. Gentle pressure on the carotid artery can reduce the activity of the diaphragm and stop hiccups.

Back pain is a problem that almost every person faces sooner or later. There are many myths and unverified claims about the causes and treatments for these unpleasant sensations. Let’s look at a few of them.

Myth 1: Sleeping on a hard mattress is beneficial

There is a well-known opinion that sleeping on a hard mattress is better for your back. However, the facts say otherwise. A mattress that is too hard can place unnecessary pressure on the spine, preventing the muscles from fully relaxing. For people with scoliosis, for example, it is preferable to use a soft mattress that better adapts to the shape of the body.

Myth 2: Osteochondrosis is caused by the deposition of waste and salts

Many people believe that osteochondrosis is the result of the deposition of waste and salts in the spine. However, in fact, this disease is associated with changes in cartilage tissue, as a result of which the intervertebral discs become less elastic and smaller in size. Osteophytes, which can form on the vertebrae during osteochondrosis, are part of the bone, and not waste or salts.

Myth 3: If you have back pain, you shouldn’t move

Restricting movement of the spine is usually recommended only in cases of serious injury. For most other diseases, such as osteochondrosis or scoliosis, physical exercise, on the contrary, can be useful to strengthen the back muscles and prevent further deterioration of the condition.

Myth 4: Spinal traction helps with scoliosis

Many people believe that spinal traction can correct scoliosis. However, this statement is not true. Spinal traction can help cope with the consequences of curvature, but will not eliminate its cause. Complete treatment of scoliosis is possible only in childhood and requires an integrated approach.

Myth 5: Herniated discs are caused by heavy lifting

Lifting heavy weights is often blamed for herniated discs. However, in fact, this is only one of the rare factors that contribute to the development of this disease. A hernia usually occurs due to an imbalance in the spine, where parts of the body deviate from their normal position. This leads to increased stress on the spine and, ultimately, to the formation of a hernia.

Myth 6: Excess weight is the main cause of back problems.

Although obesity can have a negative impact on the spine, it is not the only cause of back problems. People who are underweight may also face similar problems due to weaker muscles and thin bones. It is important to understand that caring for your back health requires a comprehensive approach and includes proper nutrition, moderate physical activity and proper posture.

Bonus: The Pepper Plaster Myth

We recently looked at the issue of mustard patches and their effectiveness. A similar myth exists about pepper patches. They may provide temporary relief from back pain due to their capsaicin content, but they do not treat the cause of the pain. For comprehensive treatment of back diseases, it is necessary to contact specialists and use complex methods, including physical therapy and exercises for the back muscles.

Myth: Garlic and lemon cure flu and colds

Garlic is generally viewed as a healthy food, but using it as the sole means of flu prevention may not be effective. The phytoncides contained in garlic, in those small quantities usually consumed in food, may have only a limited effect on influenza viruses.

Moreover, excessive consumption of garlic can negatively affect the condition of the gastric mucosa.

Foods rich in vitamin C, such as lemons, are not a panacea for the flu, but they do play an important role in supporting immunity. A lack of vitamin C can make the body less able to fight off infections, so it is important to include it in your diet.

Lemons, although not the richest source of vitamin C, can still provide health benefits. They can be used as one of the components of a balanced diet, along with other foods rich in this vitamin, such as rose hips, red pepper, sea buckthorn, kiwi and others.

Myth: Ginger cures colds

Like many other folk remedies, ginger is often associated with relieving cold symptoms. In fact, this root has a number of valuable qualities, including antioxidant properties and the ability to soothe inflammation.

However, scientific research has not yet been conducted to fully confirm that consuming ginger promotes rapid recovery. This means that while some people may experience relief from taking ginger, there is no direct evidence that this particular root is a major factor in the healing process.

Despite this, ginger has a place in the diet as a means to strengthen the immune system and maintain health. Its antioxidant properties may help fight inflammation and promote overall well-being.

However, it should be remembered that ginger does not protect against respiratory infections and does not shorten the duration of the disease. Therefore, using ginger as a supportive remedy during a cold may be beneficial, but should not be relied upon as a primary remedy.

Myth: Cranberry cures cystitis

Cranberry is a berry that is considered one of the oldest folk remedies in the fight against cystitis, an infectious disease of the urinary tract. It is recommended as a preventive remedy due to the content of special substances, such as proanthocyanidin, which are attributed to its ability to prevent the penetration of bacteria into the bladder and reduce the risk of inflammation.

Although some studies support the beneficial effects of cranberries in preventing cystitis, others are inconclusive. For example, according to the Cochrane Collaboration, regularly drinking cranberry juice may reduce the likelihood of cystitis, but the effect may be temporary and many people stop using it in the long term.

It is important to note that while cranberry may have some beneficial properties, it is not a panacea for cystitis, and its use as a preventative should be accompanied by consultation with a doctor.

To achieve maximum effect in the fight against this disease, it is recommended to combine the consumption of cranberries with other methods of prevention and treatment, including proper diet, hygiene measures and taking medications prescribed by a doctor.

Myth: Carrots and blueberries improve vision

As a continuation of the discussion about vision and its connection with nutrition, we often hear statements about the benefits of carrots and blueberries for vision. But can they really significantly improve our vision?

Carrots and blueberries contain a number of important vitamins, such as A, B, PP and C, as well as pectin and tannins, carotene, organic acids, anthocyanins and trace elements that have a beneficial effect on the health of our retina.

However, to provide her with enough keratin, she needs to eat an impressive amount of blueberries – about 2-2.5 kg per day! In addition, it is worth remembering that keratin is absorbed by the body only in the presence of fats, therefore, in addition to blueberries, it is necessary to consume fatty foods such as sour cream, milk or kefir.

It is important to emphasize that blueberries, like other vitamin-rich foods, do not directly improve vision, but rather contribute to the normal nutrition of the retina and the maintenance of its health. Myopia, as a hereditary disease, cannot always be prevented, but the rate of development of myopia in children can be slowed down through proper nutrition, which includes sufficient amounts of vitamins and minerals.

Despite all the benefits of carrots and blueberries, it is worth remembering other foods that also promote eye health. For example, spinach, kale, broccoli, oranges, apples, red peppers and corn are also rich in vitamins and minerals essential for maintaining eye and general health.

Myth: In case of a burn, urine or sour cream will help first

Immediately after receiving a burn, it is important to take first aid measures. One of the primary actions is to eliminate the cause of the burn and extinguish the flame using available means. In the event of a chemical burn, immediately flush the affected area with plenty of water to minimize exposure to chemicals.

It is important to remember not to remove the victim’s clothing, as this may cause further damage to the skin. After extinguishing the fire, it is necessary to begin the process of cooling the burn area. It is recommended to place the affected part of the body under running water at room temperature and cool it for 5-7 minutes. This will help reduce pain and prevent further tissue damage.

One of the common mistakes at this stage is trying to cool the burn with too cold water, as well as using alcohol-containing liquids or applying ointments without consulting a specialist. These measures can make the burn worse, so it is important to follow first aid recommendations.

If the burn area exceeds the size of the victim’s palm and is accompanied by blistering, whitening or blackening of the skin, you must contact a medical facility to provide qualified medical care. Burns of a large area or with severe symptoms require immediate emergency medical attention.

Myth: Kiwi relieves constipation

Kiwi, in addition to its wonderful taste and unique aroma, is a valuable source of nutrients that can help combat chronic constipation. Scientific research confirms that this fruit has a strong laxative effect without causing abdominal discomfort.

Chronic constipation is a serious disease that affects a large proportion of the population in developed countries. Various factors contribute to its occurrence, including a lack of fiber and fluid in the diet, a sedentary lifestyle and stress. In the fight against this disease, it is important to pay attention to the diet and include in it foods that have laxative properties.

Kiwi is ideal in this case due to its high soluble fiber content. This type of fiber is easily digested and promotes healthy intestinal microflora, which helps normalize digestion and facilitate stool elimination. Regular consumption of kiwi can help reduce the risk of chronic constipation and improve your quality of life.

Myth: Elderberry is incredibly healthy

At the moment, no reputable medical organization recognizes elderberry-based drugs as medicines or recommends their use for medical purposes.
However, properly prepared elderberry syrups or teas can be enjoyable to drink. The basic rule is not to eat berries raw, even if they are ripe.

In folk medicine, elderberry has been used as a fever reducer and as a diuretic. In modern conditions, supporters of alternative medicine often resort to it for the prevention and treatment of ARVI, influenza and COVID-19. However, there is only one study on its usefulness for colds, and its effectiveness for COVID-19 has not been confirmed.

Elderberries contain cyanogenic glycosides, which can produce toxic hydrocyanic acid. Although ripe berries contain little of these substances, even small amounts of fresh berries can cause vomiting, abdominal cramps and diarrhea.

To avoid poisoning, elderberries should be boiled before consumption: for example, prepare a herbal decoction, jam or syrup.

Myth: Milk helps with heartburn

Sometimes, when a person experiences heartburn or suffers from a more serious illness such as gastritis or an ulcer, folk remedies often advise “drinking milk” in the hope that it can relieve the unpleasant symptoms.

Although the calcium and protein found in milk may theoretically help relieve heartburn, in practice, drinking full-fat milk may make symptoms worse. If you want to experience heartburn relief with milk, it’s best to choose low-fat options.

However, it is important to remember that to effectively treat heartburn, you need to see a doctor and follow his recommendations, and not rely solely on folk remedies.

In case of heartburn, the following medications are recommended:

Drugs that reduce stomach acidity;

Antacids that neutralize hydrochloric acid in the stomach.

To combat heartburn, it is also important to eliminate factors that may increase gastric acid production, such as consuming fatty foods, coffee, alcohol, smoking, carbonated drinks and fruit juices.

The diet should be supplemented with cottage cheese, boiled vegetables and cereals, consumed in small portions 4-5 times a day, and the last meal should be taken 2-3 hours before bedtime. In addition, it is recommended to raise the head end of the bed by approximately 15 cm.

Myth: Honey is a universal remedy for all diseases

Honey is often perceived as a universal medicine that can overcome any ailment. In fact, honey is first and foremost a valuable food product. It contains symbiotic bacteria originating from the bee crop, which give it bactericidal properties. However, this does not mean that honey is a panacea for all diseases.

Honey certainly has a number of beneficial properties. It helps strengthen the immune system and can relieve cold symptoms due to its anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties. However, considering it an effective remedy for all diseases is an exaggeration.
The most effective way to absorb honey is to slowly dissolve it in the mouth. At the same time, nutrients gradually enter the body, providing maximum health benefits.

Myth: Honey from southern bees is healthier than from northern ones, and honey from an apiary is worse than wild honey

There is often an opinion that honey produced by southern bees is more valuable and healthy compared to honey collected by northern bees. This belief is based on the assumption that southern bees, due to their size and anatomical features, are better adapted to collecting nectar in a variety of landscapes, such as grasslands and mountainous areas. However, in reality, in beekeeping there are no such concepts as “wild bees” or “bees from the apiary” – these terms are rather marketing inventions.

In fact, only one species of bee, the honey bee, is capable of collecting nectar and producing honey. The quality of honey depends not only on the place of origin or the characteristics of a particular bee. Also important factors are the condition of the apiary, the availability of a high-quality honey base and regular control studies of honey to ensure its quality and safety.

Myth: You can’t heat honey because it becomes poisonous

There is a common misconception that heating honey releases toxins, making it dangerous to consume. However, in fact, natural honey does not contain toxins, and therefore does not become poisonous when heated.
It is important to understand the difference between the nutritional value of honey and its bactericidal properties.

Although heating honey for a long time, for example when baking in the oven, can lead to the loss of its bactericidal properties, its nutritional value remains unchanged. Thus, adding honey to porridge or hot tea to improve the taste is safe, but if we are talking about preserving the beneficial properties of honey, it is better to consume it in its natural form, without heating it.

Myth: You can’t eat honey from a metal spoon

There is a common belief that consuming honey from a metal spoon may be harmful due to possible oxidation of the product, which presumably makes it unfit for consumption. However, it is worth clarifying that most metal objects used in everyday life are not reactive and cannot cause oxidation of honey.

However, it is worth noting that unripe honey or over-absorbing it with oxygen can actually increase the acidity of the product, making it less pleasant to eat.

Myth: Pediculosis is a consequence of poor hygiene

There is a common misconception that lice are caused by poor hygiene. However, in practice, lice can appear even in those who wash their hair regularly and practice good hygiene. These insects have amazing survivability and can survive even in water at low temperatures, which means clean hair and skin are not a reliable defense against them. Removing lice and their eggs, or nits, from your scalp can be a challenging task that requires care and time.

Lice are not able to move long distances: they do not fly, do not jump, and move only short distances, crawling only a few centimeters. They are transmitted from person to person, usually during close contact of heads or through shared personal hygiene items. Therefore, it is important to maintain personal hygiene and avoid close contact with infected individuals to prevent the spread of head lice. Sharing personal care items should also be avoided to minimize the risk of lice transmission.

Transfer of lice from pets to humans is impossible. Among the many species of lice that exist on the planet, only three can parasitize humans, and they are not related to lice that live on animals. Thus, transmission of head lice occurs exclusively from person to person.

Pediculosis can occur even without itching, especially if the number of lice is small or the person does not have an allergic reaction to their saliva.
Lice can only carry typhus pathogens, but in modern conditions this disease is extremely rare in Russia.

Myth: Kerosene and vinegar can help fight head lice

There is a myth that kerosene and vinegar can help fight head lice. However, the effectiveness of such drugs has not been scientifically proven, since clinical studies have not been conducted. Even though these products can actually help get rid of lice, they may come with side effects and risks.
Vinegar is often used as a home remedy for head lice. However, a study conducted in 2004 showed that its effectiveness was low.

Vinegar was less effective than vaseline, which killed 6% of lice eggs. Other home remedies, such as mayonnaise and vegetable oil, also have very little healing effect.

Although lice most often occurs in schoolchildren, about 60% of children suffering from this disease contract it at home from relatives. Despite this, schools are not always the main source of lice infestations because there is not always the opportunity for close contact between students.

Lice cannot survive without food for more than two days. If the lice falls on the floor, the likelihood of re-infestation of the hair is already low. It is recommended to simply wash the floor and wash bedding and underwear at temperatures above 60 degrees Celsius.
